Engineered Cellular Magmatics

ECMs (Engineered Cellular Magmatics) are advanced sustainable materials for use in the design, build, operation and maintenance of resilient Gray (concrete-based) and Blue-Green (air, water, earth-centered) infrastructure.

ABOUT ECMs

ECMs are similar in structure to pumice; the natural material created when super-heated highly pressurized rock erupts from a volcano and cools rapidly, suspending tiny cavities inside the rock.

Over millennia, these volcanic deposits then react to their environment, yielding a variety of rare and valuable compounds with highly beneficial properties.

Using technology as a design tool, we replicate nature’s ability to engineer such valuable geological nano-landscapes, without investing the millennia nature takes to do the same. Mimicking nature, we mill recycled glass and other materials to create custom formulations that we fire at near-volcanic temperatures. ECM technology allows us to tailor an ECM’s porosity, its reactivity, and more, for specific applications.

We custom-engineer ECMs to perform as structural supports, as molecular sieves, microbial habitats, or reactive lattices. In both essence and effect, ECMs are nano-scale reactors, produced on an industrial scale.

PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

GlassWRX manufactures a range of direct-to-market and white label ECM-based aggregates.

  • FiltraStone™ is GlassWRX’s foundation filtration media made from up-cycled post-consumer waste glass. It is an engineered cellular magmatic that replicates the best features of premium pumice filtration media.
  • FiltraStone+™ (FiltraStone Plus Carbon) is GlassWRX’s enhanced filtration media made from up-cycled waste glass thermally compounded with a carbon formula. It is an engineered cellular magmatic that replicates the best features of premium volcanic filtration media but eliminates the need for the addition of carbon nutrients in biofilter and bioreactor applications.

ECM PATENTS & LICENSING

With numerous patents pending, we collaborate with research institutions to extend the reach and positive impact of ECM technology. This keeps us moving closer towards our vision of a world without waste.

PRIMARY USE CASES

Mimicking the systemic nature of earth’s biosphere and the role of magmatics, we have engineered a new bedrock for the circular economy. We are exploring ECMs industrial use cases across resilient construction, filtration and remediation.
